2010 Outing

Palm house & lake to Victoria gate

Kew Gardens

Saturday 19th June

This year’s summer outing is to Kew Gardens.

Kew Gardens is perhaps the world's most famous garden and has over 300 acres of beautiful landscapes and plant collections.

There is plenty to explore either on your own or on the Kew Explorer - an 8 stop hop-on/hop-off train which offers a 40 minute commentary. Tours start at 11.00 and run hourly.Palm House

Some highlights include:

· The Palm House, designed by Decimus Burton, was constructed between 1844 and 1848 with 700 panes of glass

· The Temperate House is the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse in the world. covering 4,880 square metres (5,850 square yards) and extending to 19 metres (63 feet) high.

· The Pagoda completed in 1762. The ten-storey octagonal structure is 163 ft high (nearly 50 m)

· The PagodaPrincess of Wales Conservatory. This conservatory was named in honour of Augusta, Princess of Wales who founded the Gardens. It was opened by Diana, Princess of Wales, in July 1987.

· The Xstrata Treetop Walkway was designed by architects of the London Eye, taking visitors on an amazing journey from tree roots to tree top.

Refreshments are available at several cafés and restaurants with a selection of hot meals or sandwiches. Picnics are permitted but not in the glasshouses!
